about

End of August came to me after spending the summer in Nova Scotia, where I have a lot of deep family roots. It’s about the bittersweet feelings of having to leave the comfort and peace of a special place or person to return to the real world of challenges and hardship. But it is also about how these places and people, however far away, are part of who we are, offering grounding and inspiration even when we don’t realize it. I grew up around a lot of Canadian East coast Celtic music, and it was important to me that this song have that same feel. I wanted to pay tribute to my family’s roots. I am a huge fan of east coast singer/songwriters like Stan Rogers, The Rankin Family, Joel Plaskett and Matt Mayes, all of whom have graciously provided me with songwriting inspiration.

lyrics

I think it’s time I pack my suitcase
And make the bed up nice and neat
Will you see my tears as I mouth the words ‘I love you’
As I vanish in a cab down the street

At the end of August
Hits me harder every year
End of August
I’d beg, borrow, lie and steal
Just to freeze the final moments
As the sunset fills the sky
Stealing my breath, and giving new life

As the airplane wheels life off the ground
My heart is sinking fast
I swear I see your face from row 18
But time slips away, like sand through the glass

It’s the end of August
And I’ve gotta go home
Sweet months of August
The best times I’ve ever known
Just to freeze the final moments
As the sunset fills the sky
Stealing my breath, with you by my side

When my plane touches down I’ll wonder what you’re doing
And how our lives became so incongruent
I miss you already

Say you’ll me tomorrow
When you wake up
And I’m not there
But the smell of me hangs in the air
And the house feels cold and empty

Because it’s the end of August
And I’m leaving tonight
But when my days get cold I’ll picture you
In that South Shore light
Back home on Barrington Street
My hand in yours
Sunset at the waterfront always seemed to be the cure

I’m leaving
I’m leaving tonight
We’ve run out of time
